About this course


Our sophisticated and culturally-aware graduates are in huge demand in this vibrant and rapidly expanding industry. You will have a significant advantage when entering the industry because you will be prepared both to succeed and to enjoy the benefits of this fast changing and exciting sector.
You will be equipped with the appropriate knowledge and understanding to move into contract catering (including event catering), hotels, leisure (such as theatres and casinos), licensed retail (pubs and clubs), restaurants and welfare catering.
Recent graduates have gained their first time employment in junior management positions in a wide variety of organisations. Major employers such as Cunard, Hilton, Marriott and Sodexo have offered placements to students on our various hospitality management degrees which have led to future employment. Graduates have also gone on to set up their own businesses, work in consultancy, and become teachers and lecturers.

Course programme

Year 1

Your first year will give you a broad overview of the hospitality industry. You will improve your knowledge of business and develop an appreciation of the standards and service consistency needed for food and drink operations, front office, managing facilities and customer service. You will learn a new language or improve on an existing one, such as Spanish, French, German or Mandarin, and you will develop an understanding of culture and society in relation to your chosen language.

Year 2

In your second year, you will improve your management skills and discover how hospitality businesses are created and developed globally. You will become familiar with systems that support effective food and drink operations and facilities, and boost your language skills by taking part in cultural field work. Research methods will provide you with the skills to engage in both academic and business research, giving you an excellent base for placements that involve market research.

Optional placement year

Expand your horizons, build your confidence and boost your skills with an optional paid work placement. You'll follow an agreed training programme under supervision and, on successful completion, will be awarded a Certificate of Industrial Experience. You can take placements in the UK or overseas across a wide range of sectors. Over 250 past graduates have taken placements and we strongly encourage you do so if you do not yet have significant industry experience.

Final year

In your final year, you will further develop your knowledge and critical skills and undertake the honours project – this will provide you with an opportunity to investigate topics in greater detail through a management-style dissertation. You will study core modules including managing innovation, business strategy for tourism and hospitality, and culture and society. Our elective topics include languages, leadership and talent management, and contemporary issues in tourism.
