The module will enable students to appreciate the application of laboratory investigations in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease.

This module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology of common systemic diseases. It will integrate materials from the biology of disease and allow students to undertake basic physiological experiments to appreciate the pathophysiological principles of specific conditions, including the biology of cancer.. Students will have to undertake practical classes thus developing skills in physiological experimentation; experimental design, ethical implications, health and safety considerations, data collection and presentation, statistic analyses and report writing.

The overall aim of this module is that the student understands and gains experience of the importance of patient-centred care, patient consent and autonomy, evidence based practice, clinical audit and multidisciplinary team working. A theoretical underpinning of medical ethics and law, alongside defined clinical procedural skills will also be covered.

Students will be introduced to the historical contexts that underpin the safety movement, quality improvement and equity / affordability issues in healthcare practice. Through case studies and evidence-based practice, the LOs will be explored in a modern context looking at national and international examples of movements to improve healthcare practice.
