This course is offered as a four year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.

This four year full time course will offer a scientific perspective on audio and music technology, and is designed to prepare students for careers in both the audio and music industry. The programme will be of interest to aspiring audio engineers, audio mixers, studio managers, acousticians, technicians, DSP engineers, sound designers, experimental composers, software and hardware developers, and passionate, creative students who love all things audio. This course is also offered as a three year course without a foundation year.

You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with students from other courses, for example musicians, engineers, music producers, film and TV producers, video games designers, graphic artists, actors and dancers just to name a few. This will all help to grow your network; essential for success in the creative industries. As a Bucks student, you’ll also have free access to the XTC collaborations platform, so finding a collaborator for your projects from any field as never been easier.

About this course

There are a number of roles that graduates could go in to including; audio engineer, mix engineer, mastering engineer, live sound engineer (for music, theatre etc), systems technician, studio technician, acoustician, installation specialist, TV or radio recording, product designers, sound editor, programmer. During your time at Bucks you will have built a comprehensive network of contacts, have worked in industry-standard facilities, gained work experience, and been taught by industry practitioners and professionals.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for the 3-year undergraduate programme, or those who do not feel fully prepared for a Level 4 course, will be considered for the 4-year programme including a Foundation Year.

Course programme

During the course, you’ll learn about software engineering, electronics engineering, and recording studio engineering – learning the science behind audio hardware and software. This knowledge may allow you to develop your own technology software or hardware products. You’ll also cover acoustics and psychoacoustics, learning about the psychology behind the perception of sound, and the physiological effects it can have. Other topics covered on the course include sound design, sonic art, experimental music composition, post production audio, and mixing and mastering for different media applications.

Our High Wycombe Campus is home to our multi-million pound Sennheiser Sound Lab, fully equipped by world leading production suppliers and partners, so you can get your hands on the same tools as the best in the business. Our suppliers include Sennheiser, Midas, Focusrite, Novation, University Audio, Native Instruments, and AC Lighting. There are a wide range of creative facilities to explore, from our music rehearsal space, to our TV studios and green-screen room. You can also access live event venues such as the Students’ Union, Wycombe Swan Theatre and Wycombe Town Hall.

We have partnerships with Focusrite, Sennheiser, BBC Introducing, Watford Football Club and more. As a Bucks student, you will have the opportunity to connect with our partners, for example through guest lectures, demonstrations, product testing, industry trips and work experience.

You will be taught by tutors who have worked in the music industry in areas such as studio-based music production, live sound engineering and production, sound design, location recording and audio post production for TV, film and other media.
