Optometrists are eye-care professionals who detect sight problems and prescribe and fit glasses, contact lenses and other visual aids. Optometrists also detect and manage a variety of eye conditions such as glaucoma.



Accredited by the General Optical Council, GCU offers a high-quality clinical education that is highly rated by students. Clinical training takes place in our purpose-built on-campus Eye Clinic.



Open to the public, it offers contact lens fitting, orthoptics, dispensing, low vision, myopia control, infant and learning disability clinics. Employment prospects for graduates in Optometry are excellent and our graduates are highly rated by employers throughout the UK.



Optometrists can continue their career development through various postgraduate schemes. These include training towards qualifications for Independent Prescribing and a range of specialist skills.

Course programme

All students are required by the General Optical Council to have been cleared by Disclosure Scotland at the advanced level to work in a clinical situation. Disclosure is sought for the Clinic here at Glasgow Caledonian University and applications will be made during enrolment in the first week of the first year of the course. This Disclosure certificate once obtained will last for the duration of the course for the GCU clinic premises only.
In your personal statement you should include your intent to study optometry. Some work experience always useful.
