This full-time course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to practice as a Paramedic. On successful completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for registration as a paramedic. The course offers education and training in the rewarding, challenging and diverse role of a paramedic, teaching the essential emergency and urgent care skills that are needed for safe care delivery.
The programme is delivered in partnership with the West Midlands Ambulance Service who will provide you with experiential learning in the out-of-hospital unscheduled care environment. You will also have opportunities to develop skills in simulation and experience placements in the wider NHS. This course will prepare you for key aspects of the paramedic role including public interaction, contributions to all aspect of community and out-of-hospital care, and working in demanding conditions and challenging environments.

This module will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to undertake academic study, including an introduction to academic writing, referencing, critical thinking skills, reflective practice, and searching for appropriate evidence and literature. The aim of this module is to provide you with opportunities to apply learning from your study at the university into the real world environment. You will work with the university’s partner ambulance services under the supervision of a mentor, and will be exposed to real patients who have called the ambulance service for help. You will work towards the HCPC Standards of Proficiency and will be expected to behave in a manner that is conducive with the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students (HCPC, 2012) whilst on placement. Students will also be working towards the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics of the registered healthcare professional (HCPC, 2012).

The aim of this module is to provide you with a strong background in the key concepts of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology as applied to paramedic practice. You will be able to develop the underpinning knowledge in order to be able to discuss the normal human anatomy and physiology across the age continuum and relate this to the pathophysiology and management of common injury and illness, including pharmacological interventions. In addition, the module will explore models of health and illness, inequalities in health and psychosocial determinants of health, and consider the role of the paramedic in health promotion. The HCPC Standards of Proficiency will inform much of the teaching, and you will be asked to consider the management of patients in the context of the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students (HCPC, 2012) whilst working towards the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics of the registered healthcare professional (HCPC, 2012).

This module is designed to promote thought about how health care professionals communicate and interact with each other and with their patients/service users, and to introduce professionalism, ethics and law for paramedic practice. You will explore communication from a professional and therapeutic perspective and develop the skills needed for working in partnership with service users in order to promote their empowerment. You will consider what it means to be a professional, and in particular a health care professional, who will be working with vulnerable groups and as part of an interprofessional team. The scope of practice, ethical principles and legal issues will all be explored in the context of paramedic practice. The module will incorporate the 6C’s model and the values of the NHS and introduce you to the Making Every Contact Count philospophy.

The aim of this module is to provide you with further opportunities to apply learning from your study at the university into the real world environment. You will continue to work with the university’s partner Ambulance Services to hone your skills under the supervision of a mentor but there will be additional placements in an Operating Department, Obstetric Unit, Children’s Ward, Emergency Department, Mental Health Unit and End of Life/Palliative Care unit. These placements will help to remove the unpredictability of ambulance work and ensure that you receive exposure to certain patient groups and have an opportunity to practice some skills that are less frequently encountered in the ambulance service placement.

This module aims to develop a critical knowledge and practice through the concepts of leadership and clinical decision making in paramedic care. The module will explore the models of clinical decision making and how this is applied in practice settings In addition the module will provide you with the skills, knowledge and expertise to support your development of clinical leadership within your professional practice. This module will draw on a diversity of leadership concepts and approaches and will encourage you to discuss, reflect and apply some of these concepts to your everyday clinical practice

Cases involving pregnancy, childbirth and children are relatively uncommon in UK paramedic care but there is always an expectation that the paramedic will be able to manage any issue or emergency involving these specific service-user groups. The nature of obstetric cases ranges from normal childbirth through to maternal cardiac arrest whilst childhood conditions vary from the mild, self-limiting illness through to the acutely ill or injured child. The aim of this module is to provide you with the underpinning knowledge and skills to manage cases relating to the specialities of obstetrics and paediatrics. The focus is on providing a structured approach that will create a framework for you to assess and manage these cases effectively.

Mental Ill health and cognitive impairments affect a significant number of the people who seek help from the emergency medical services. The aim of this module is to provide you with an understanding of the more common conditions relating to mental health and cognitive impairment, to explore methods to help communicate with people who may be in crisis or for whom communication is difficult, and to explore management options from a paramedic perspective. The module will be taught by specialists in the fields of mental health and cognitive impairment.
