This full-time course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to practice as a Paramedic. On successful completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for registration as a paramedic. The course offers education and training in the rewarding, challenging and diverse role of a paramedic, teaching the essential emergency and urgent care skills that are needed for safe care delivery.
The programme is delivered in partnership with the West Midlands Ambulance Service who will provide you with experiential learning in the out-of-hospital unscheduled care environment. You will also have opportunities to develop skills in simulation and experience placements in the wider NHS. This course will prepare you for key aspects of the paramedic role including public interaction, contributions to all aspect of community and out-of-hospital care, and working in demanding conditions and challenging environments.

Please note that the first year of this course will be taught at Wolverhampton City Campus. After this first year, if you start the course in April 2021, years two – four of the course will be based at Telford Campus. If you start the course in September 2021, years two – four of the course will be based at Walsall Campus.

The aim of this module is to provide you with a strong background in the key concepts of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology as applied to paramedic practice. You will be able to develop the underpinning knowledge in order to be able to discuss the normal human anatomy and physiology across the age continuum and relate this to the pathophysiology and management of common injury and illness, including pharmacological interventions. In addition, the module will explore models of health and illness, inequalities in health and psychosocial determinants of health, and consider the role of the paramedic in health promotion. The HCPC Standards of Proficiency will inform much of the teaching, and you will be asked to consider the management of patients in the context of the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students (HCPC, 2012) whilst working towards the Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics of the registered healthcare professional (HCPC, 2012).

This module is designed to promote thought about how health care professionals communicate and interact with each other and with their patients/service users, and to introduce professionalism, ethics and law for paramedic practice. You will explore communication from a professional and therapeutic perspective and develop the skills needed for working in partnership with service users in order to promote their empowerment. You will consider what it means to be a professional, and in particular a health care professional, who will be working with vulnerable groups and as part of an interprofessional team. The scope of practice, ethical principles and legal issues will all be explored in the context of paramedic practice. The module will incorporate the 6C’s model and the values of the NHS and introduce you to the Making Every Contact Count philospophy.
