4. Provide students with high-quality practice learning opportunities, working within inter-professional teams in a variety of healthcare settings.

5. Enable students to critically analyse the complexity of professional, ethical and legal frameworks and their impact on decision-making.

6. Support students to develop a wide range of transferable skills including the ability to investigate and apply research evidence, leadership and management skills, and information technology skills.

7. Explore the wider political, cultural, economic and social context of health and social care provision and the implications for those working in the sector.

8. Facilitate the development of practitioners as change agents, able to respond to a changing and dynamic practice environment, safely and effectively treating and managing patients with a wide range of conditions.

Successful completion of the programme will enable you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You will also be eligible to join the College of Podiatry.

Course programme

Module: 4HW068

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module aims to construct a bedrock of knowledge and understanding in the key fields of biochemistry and physiology. It is essential to underpin future modules that cover the contexts of diseases that affect the lower limb and underpins the diagnostic process and clinical judgement of the Podiatrist. The module will look at biological components of life in the context of biochemistry and go on to cover the physiological systems in the context the “normal” physiological concepts while seeking to offer linkage more specifically to the “abnormal.”

Module: 4HW069

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module builds on the pre-clinical module moving your knowledge and skills forward in the treatment of patients in a managed clinical environment under the supervision of qualified staff. You will build up the necessary dexterity and skills associated with nail cutting and debridement of callus and production of chair-side removable devices and padding adhered to the foot. You will develop your knowledge of health and safety and record keeping in the clinical environment and learn new skills associated with basic patient assessment of the lower limb. Connections will be made between concurrent theoretical leaning and the use of theory in practice. You will be given insight into “Profession identity” as Podiatrists and gain an understanding of the working relationships between professionals as members of health care teams together in the NHS and the private sector. The module is conducted in a managed clinical environment supervised by qualified podiatrists to assist you in the development of develop the necessary psychomotor, cognitive and affective skills associated with podiatric practice.

Module: 4HW065

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module sets the scene for the development of essential practical skills that are required before you can move on to treating patients as part of your clinical learning experience. There is a strong focus on development of the psychomotor skills and the underpinning knowledge and health and safety components required to demonstrate safe and competent practice. The content of this module will initiate some of the basic knowledge required e.g. professional development, physics and physiology of movement, physiology and microbiology and introduction to lower limb anatomy. The module is conducted in a managed clinical environment supervised by qualified podiatric staff to develop the necessary psychomotor, cognitive and affective skills associated with podiatric practice.

Module: 4HW066

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module will consider an holistic approach to the diagnostic process and the identification of pathologies associated with trauma, infection, systemic disease and congenital factors. You will gain an understanding of the biological basis of health and disease in the lower limb, including detailed structure and function of the skin and nails, and the inflammatory processes and histopathologies associated with lower limb conditions. It is also important to consider the social and psychological factors that determine the health and well-being of an individual and the needs of the patient and carer.

Module: 4HW067

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module will focus on the specific fundamentals of musculoskeletal structure and function. It is important that you gain a detailed grounding in the structure and function to underpin the pathomechanics that will follow in future modules. You will explore the physics and physiology of movement, the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system from both a physiological perspective of muscle and osseous development, growth and structure and the perspective of the underlying physics that underpins movement.

Module: 4HW070

Credits: 20

Period: 1

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module will provide an introduction to microbiology and prokaryotic cell structure, and allow you to handle micro-organisms in a safe and competent manner. You will learn how to apply the principles of infection prevention and control within the practical setting in order to minimise the risk to the practitioner and the patient. Throughout the module and coursework you will develop your deductive reasoning, team working and written communication skills.

Module: 5HW065

Credits: 20

Period: 2

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module builds on the clinical studies in year 1 and forms the basis of your practical assessment in year 2; your clinical experience will move forward with a more detailed evaluation of patients and a more knowledgeable exposition of management plans. The module is conducted in a managed clinical environment supervised by qualified staff to develop the necessary psychomotor, cognitive and affective skills associated with autonomous podiatric treatment of a patient. You will be expected to display effective clinical judgment skills and well-reasoned patient management plans, including referrals and an understanding of work within a fuller health care team. *This subject is conducted entirely within the clinical environment including the on-site central clinic facilities and the clinical placements. The hours allocated extend beyond the normal notional 10 hours per credit because time is spent working in a clinical environment practicing skills. This contributes to the professional body requirement of 1000 hours clinical activity across the three years of the course.

Module: 5HW067

Credits: 20

Period: 2

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module will provide you the underpinning knowledge and preparation for undertaking a research project in your final year. You will build on your understanding of evidence based practice, and consider the hierarchies of evidence and the use of evidence to guide podiatric practice. Building on this you will explore the generation of new knowledge through research in the field. You will explore the research process and how the research question guides the design and methodologies used. You will be introduced to techniques of sampling, data collection and data analysis (statistics). As part of this module you will develop your skills in searching, retrieving and critiquing research papers to inform practice.

Module: 5HW064

Credits: 20

Period: 2

Type: Core

Locations: Walsall Campus

This module will focus on human development and the changes associated with the physiological ageing process in the context of podiatric pathologies. Advanced pathologies affecting the lower limb and the developmental physiology that underpins them will be explored including disease, infection and other contributory factors linked to treatment of lower limb problems. As part of your understanding of the physiological ageing process you will also consider key areas such as dementia and a range of medical conditions. You will reflect on the patient as an individual and disconnect any notion that chronological age alone has an inevitable progression to lower limb ill health or is a determining factor in exclusion to specific lines of treatment.
