You will have access to our sport therapy/physiotherapy suite, sport and exercise science laboratories that include cutting edge technology such as our 3D motion capture system, and our environment chamber.

You will have opportunities to work with some of our key partners such as British Judo, Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. and Walsall F.C, as well as university sports teams to develop industry skills relevant to a career in sport and exercise therapy. In addition we have close links with local organisations such as cardiac rehabilitation centres.

Our ‘Career Development Week’ will allow you to gain additional employment-related skills and qualifications as you progress through the course.

Our employability modules enable you to explore Sport and Exercise Therapy related career pathways and engage in career development planning that prepares you for graduate-level employment in a competitive industry.

A placement module will provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and mentoring in an applied sports and exercise therapy context.

You will also have the opportunity to transfer to an optional sandwich placement year. Our sandwich placement option allows you to take a full-year work placement, which can be undertaken abroad. A number of students in our department have been successful in securing places on these schemes in countries such as Spain, France, Canada and the US.

This purpose of this module is to develop a detailed understanding of anatomy and physiology that is necessary for successful practice as a Sport and Exercise Therapist. You will learn the structural and functional components of tissues such as bones, muscles, nerves and ligaments. The physiological response to exercise will also be covered including the basic energy systems and the energetic response to exercise

This module is designed to introduce you to the physiological and psychological response to sports injuries. Topics of study include pain, the inflammatory response and tissue repair. There are also topics that consider injuries that relate to specific tissue types and body regions. The module also explores the psychological aspects of sports injury including the psychological responses to injury as well barriers to recovery.

This module supports the development of skills in the immediate management of injuries that occur in sport and exercise environments. You will learn basic life support, pitch side management of injuries including support for suspected spinal injuries. Consideration will also be given to the process of determining when athletes are fit to return to play and also maintaining accurate records and procedures for accident reporting

This module starts with an introduction to basic massage techniques before advancing to sports massage. Topics studied include contraindications to massage, postural assessment, pre and post event massage as well as specific techniques such as myofascial release and muscle energy technique. You will also be introduced to professional standards and ethical issue in sport and exercise therapy. Completion of this module equips you with the necessary skills to work confidently with athletes in real sports events.

This module will teach you the principles and techniques used to assess joints and tissue structures. This will include functional assessment as well as special tests with a focus at this stage on assessment of the upper and lower limbs. You will also learn to recognise the common sport and exercise related injuries affecting the joints you are assessing. In addition, you will learn physical examination and assessment skills as well as develop your decision making and clinical reasoning skills.

This module provides opportunities to further develop and apply the skills of examination and assessment of peripheral joints. You will learn and apply the techniques of manual therapy to the treatment of peripheral joints, tissues and structures. Treatment methods are based on current recognised approaches to manual therapy and consider the biomechanical and physiological rationale for treatment. Contraindications to manual therapy, as well as recognition of normal and abnormal responses, will be covered with the aim of developing further the clinical reasoning and decision making skills expected of graduate Sport and Exercise Therapists.

The purpose of this module is to develop skills in research design and investigation. You will explore a topic of interest through an in-depth review of published literature that will then be used to guide the development of your own project ideas. This will involve identification of the approaches and methods used in past work. Methods of analysing data will be covered including statistical analysis of quantitative data. Finally, the University own procedures for ethical approval of projects will be considered to ensure that by completing the module you are ready to undertake your own self-managed project in the final year. As a result the module prepares you for progression to The Professional Project module at level 6.
