The course involves the prevention of injury and rehabilitation back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness for a wide range of patients. The course uses the principles of sport and exercise sciences, and the study of health, injury, and disease, to prepare patients for training, competition, or work.

Please note the first year of this course will be taught at Wolverhampton City Campus, followed by three years at Walsall Campus.

Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will be eligible to apply for full insured membership with The Society of Sports Therapists.

You will have access to our sport therapy/physiotherapy suite, sport and exercise science laboratories that include cutting edge technology such as our 3D motion capture system, and our environment chamber.

You will have opportunities to work with some of our key partners such as British Judo, Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. and Walsall F.C, as well as university sports teams to develop industry skills relevant to a career in sport and exercise therapy. In addition we have close links with local organisations such as cardiac rehabilitation centres.

Our ‘Career Development Week’ will allow you to gain additional employment-related skills and qualifications as you progress through the course.

Our employability modules enable you to explore Sport and Exercise Therapy related career pathways and engage in career development planning that prepares you for graduate-level employment in a competitive industry.

A placement module will provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and mentoring in an applied sports and exercise therapy context.

You will explore the role of exercise and sedentary behaviour in the maintenance of health and wellbeing, and the prevention of a large number of diseases, including coronary heart disease, diabetes and obesity. You will investigate the relationship between physical, social and mental/emotional health, and identify strategies for maintaining and improving health and wellbeing

This module is designed to introduce you to the physiological and psychological response to sports injuries. Topics of study include pain, the inflammatory response and tissue repair. There are also topics that consider injuries that relate to specific tissue types and body regions. This module supports the development of skills in the immediate management of injuries that occur in sport and exercise environments. You will learn basic life support, pitch side management of injuries including support for suspected spinal injuries. Consideration will also be given to the process of determining when athletes are fit to return to play and also maintaining accurate records and procedures for accident reporting

This module starts with an introduction to basic massage techniques before advancing to sports massage. Topics studied include contraindications to massage, postural assessment, pre and post event massage as well as specific techniques such as myofascial release and muscle energy technique. You will also be introduced to professional standards and ethical issue in sport and exercise therapy. Completion of this module equips you with the necessary skills to work confidently with athletes in real sports events.
