BTEC 90 Credit Diploma and Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care - Level 3 Overview

This is a vocational course equivalent to three A Levels. You will be required to undertake work placements within the health and social care sector caring for a range of different client groups. There will also be an expectancy that you do voluntary work throughout the course.

Please note, you will need to complete the 90 Credit Diploma before progressing to the Extended Diploma.

Entry requirements

For the BTEC 90 Credit Diploma you will need:

  • Five subject-relevant GCSEs at grade C or above (must include English, maths and GCSE science), or:
  • A relevant Level 2 BTEC diploma with merit, plus GCSE maths and English at grade C or above

For the Level 3 Extended Diploma you will need:

  • Successful completion of the Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma in Health and Social Care
  • Five subject-relevant GCSEs at grade C or above (must include English, maths and science)

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through coursework, placement reports and a placement portfolio.

What does the course lead to?

On successful completion of the course you will have achieved the BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care which is equivalent to three A Levels.

Along with your work placement experiences and voluntary work, this qualification should enhance your employment prospects within the health and social care sectors in a range of roles.

It may also enable you to apply to progress onto Higher Education.

What will I study?

You will study a range of units that include those listed under the BTEC Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3 and additional units including:

  • Safeguarding adults and promoting independence
  • Development through the life stages
  • Personal and professional development in health and social care
  • Sociological perspectives for health and social care
Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
