Course programme

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: There are no formal entry requirements but students should provide a portfolio of recent imagery.

DO I NEED MY OWN CAMERA?

We find that eventually students want to purchase their own equipment, however it is not necessary for the course and we would advise speaking to the course tutor before making a major investment.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
BTEC Awards are designed to provide focused and specialist work related qualifications in a range of sectors. The BTEC Short Courses offer a focused qualification for learners, particularly more mature learners, who wish to follow a short programme of study that is directly related to their work experience or to an aspect of employment that they wish to move into in due course. On successful completion of these qualifications, learners may progress into or within employment and/or continue their study in the vocational area.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Explore and experience the potential of still photography in the medium of both traditional and digital technology. The Course is made up 2 specialist units.

Location Techniques- This unit assumes no prior knowledge of photography and learners will explore the basic principles of camera operation, lens selection, composition and visual imagery.

Studio Techniques - Building on the knowledge gained in the first unit, this unit provides the opportunity to develop skills in the studio environment.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
The course will be held in the new-Visual and Community Arts- building at the Isle of Wight College with location work off site, where appropriate. You will learn by a series of demonstrations, workshops and practical tasks, which you will evaluate and analyse to develop your skills and knowledge. These findings are entered into a sketchbook which will build a portfolio of work to be assessed by an external examiner. Research for tasks can be carried out in our excellent LRC (Learning Resource Centre) which as a student of the Isle of Wight College you are entitled to use either for internet research or use of the excellent books available there. It is anticipated that in addition to the five hours a week tuition time you will need to allow for five hours private study. You need to be prepared to study independently and challenge yourself to achieve high standards of success.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
The Award course forms the basis of a progression to the BTEC Certificate in Photography. Although the BTEC Short Course programmes do not currently attract UCAS tariff points they can form an invaluable basis on which to build a portfolio of work to help to gain access to HE as a mature student.
