Course programme

Overview

If you have a passion for playing sport, a desire to know and understand more about sports performance, and are considering a career in the sports industry, you may be suitable for a place in the Kirklees College Sports Academy.

On this course you will get an introduction to all aspects of sport and sporting performance.

You will investigate the organisation and development of sport, as well as basic principles of sports science and nutrition.

This will give you an excellent foundation to build your knowledge, skills and ability for a career in sports coaching or leadership and will enhance your knowledge of personal and team performance in sport.

You will also improve your own skills, fitness and techniques in your chosen sport.

You will train with top professional coaches for your chosen sports and compete at the top level, competing in high quality British Colleges Sports Leagues as well as cup competitions.

You may also have the opportunity to take other related awards, including NGB Coaching awards, Emergency First Aid at Work and a level 1 award in Sports Leadership.

You will cover the following units:

  • Fitness testing and training
  • Practical sport
  • Injury in sport
  • Planning and leading sports activities
  • Nutrition for sports performance
  • Development of personal fitness
  • Effects of exercise on the body

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of four GCSE’s grade D or above including English language, and maths at grade E or above, as well as preferably science and PE, or a higher level of participation in sporting activities, or
  • A level 1 qualification at pass or merit grade, English at level 1 and maths at entry level 3
  • A good interview and reference
  • You will also need a strong interest in sport and be participating in sport and fitness on a regular basis.

You will attend a trial for your selected academy sport where you will be expected to display a suitable level of performance.
