BTEC First Diploma in Childrens Care (Learning & Development)
This is a one year course equivalent to 4 GCSEs graded A*-C on successful completion of the course with a merit or distinction grade. It could lead to entry onto the AS level in Health & Social or the BTEC National Certificate in Childcare. You will be required to complete 300 hours of work experience in a childcare environment.

Teaching methods vary from practical hands on experience with our virtual babies to independent research projects using multi-media applications.

We encourage critical thinking and self-reflection and aim to create a positive, creative and friendly environment where students are motivated and feel confident to express empathy and understanding with a diverse range of human needs.

What will I study on this course?
You will study the following units:
  • Understanding childrens development
  • Keeping children safe
  • Communicating with children and adults
  • Preparing and maintaining environments for childcare
  • Professional development
  • Roles and responsibilities in childcare
  • Supporting childrens play and learning
  • The development and care of babies and young children under three years
  • Providing support for children with disabilities or special educational needs.

The learning experience is enhanced through discussion, work experience (300 hours), talks from visiting professionals, visits to exhibitions, conferences and health fairs.
