ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Four GCSEs at grades D or above (To include English Language)
  • A similar level one qualification at distinction level
  • An interview which involves a presentation by staff, individual and group activities and a 1:1 interview with a member of the health & social care team.
  • Two appropriate references, a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and appropriate work experience
In addition to these essential requirements you need to be able to demonstrate a good attendance record, evidence of recent academic study, good interpersonal skills, the ability to work with others, a commitment to or an interest in a career in health & social care and a positive attitude.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

You will spend two days per week in college, where you will learn by a series of task based learning activities, delivered by vocationally qualified staff and observation and participation in placements.

It is a part of the course requirements that you attend work experience during your course. You will spend two days per week in a placement these will be in placements such as residential care settings, community resource centres, schools, pre-schools, and settings for adults/children with particular needs.

As well as studying your core programme, you will have the opportunity to study additional qualifications. These will add to your personal development as well as be attractive to future employers or training providers.

Most health related professions require Maths, English and Science GCSE Grade C or above and will make this part of their entry requirements. You may improve your GCSE's by studying alongside your main course.

We strive to ensure a varied and diverse curriculum and you will be involved in a variety of enrichment activities. We organise various trips throughout the year for example head hunters and Thorpe Park. We also have a variety of guest speakers who visit the department such as specialist nurses, midwives and representatives from Camp America. We also take an active part in fund raising for both local and national causes.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
This course is a stepping-stone to further development or training. Some students, who complete the course successfully, choose to gain employment in the care sector as nursing auxiliary, classroom assistant or a care assistant in a residential home. With further training or study, students go into careers such as social work, residential care management, housing, nursing, teaching, the probation service, psychology, physiotherapy and midwifery.

You need to make sure you are prepared to study independently and challenge yourself to achieve high standards of success. This course is an opportunity to develop your study skills to be able to progress to a more advanced course or training such as:
