BTECs are vocationally related qulaifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. Additionally, they are popular and effective because they engage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern day workplace. These skills include: team working; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; presenting information effectively; and accurately completing administrative tasks and processes. BTEC Firsts motivate learners, and open doors to further study and responsibility in the work place.  The BTEC Sport Level 2 course is a one year full time programme which focuses on developing skills, knowledge and understanding to enable learners to gain future employment within the field of sport and leisure. The course provides learners with opportunites to: Link education and the world of work in engaging, relevant and practical ways. Enhance their English and mathematical competence in relevant, applied scenarios.  Develop transferable interpersonal skills, including working with others, problem solving, independent study, and personal, learning and thinking skills.   Provide learners with a route through education that has clear progression pathways into further study or an appenticeship. Learners will complete 360 guided learning hours for the Extended Certificate covering 12 units of study. As part of the programme learners will also complete Essential Skills in Communication and Application of Number, and activities on WEST to develop their literacy and numeracy skills. Opportunities will also be provided to improve grades in GCSE English, Welsh and Mathematics. Sports Academy will also be included as part of the programme.

About this course

Learners will require a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grades A* - C, which includes English/Welsh first language and a D in Maths or vice versa. Progressions from BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport with a distinction profile is also accepted. All applicants are assessed on an individual basis and will be offered the opportunity to attend an interview. Advisory interviews are available prior to application.

This qualification has a core of underpinning knowledge, skills and understanding, and a range of options to reflect the breadth of pathways within this sector. Learner progression could include further study on a Level 3 course, an apprenticeship or employment. The level of progression will depend on the grade achieved in the qualification. A merit profie or higher, and a successful interview is required to progress onto Level 3 Sports course.

Careers directly related to sport include: sport and leisure centre assistants, sports coaching and development, sports clothing and equipment, sports media, fitness instructors.

Additional information

The majority of the units are assessed through internal assessments. The 2 core units are externally marked and must be passed in order to complete the course. The year is split into 2 semesters:

  • Semester 1 - 2 core units, 1 mandatory and 3 optional units being completed. This includes the 2 online examained units. 
  • Semester 2 - 6 optional units.

The format of evidence generated to meet the criteria of the assignments can include the following methods:

  • Written reports, graphs, posters
  • Projects
  • Practical assessments
  • Audio-visual recordings of performance
  • A working logbook or diary
  • Presentations
  • Case studies 

Each of the 12 units are marked to meet pass, merit and distinction criteria. Failure to meet this criteria or missing the deadline will result in failing the unit, which will have an impact on the overall course grade and successfull completion of the qualification.
