BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport  focuses on the development of both transferrable and sector specific skills. The purpose of this course is to develop independent learners with the transferable skills, attributes and behaviours needed for learners to progress onto further study. It is a one year course which focuses on developing the learners' knowledge of fitness, leisure, well-being and sport while also developing skills such as communication, problem solving, working with others and managing information. Alongside the Level 1 Sport course students will study the Welsh Baccalaureate and re-sit GCSE English and/or Mathematics if required, and will have the opportunity to participate in the sports academies. 

About this course

Normally learners will require a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades D - G, or equivilant, including English/Welsh First Language and Mathematics.  All applicants are assessed on an individual basis and will be offered the opportunity to attend an interview. Advisory interviews are available prior to application.

Course programme

Through studying this course students will:

  • Develop transferable skills like communication, working with others, problem solving and managing information
  • Develop sector specific knowledge
  • Have the opportunity to attend the Sports Academies
  • Have opportunites to work and make links with the local community
  • Work towards becoming independent learners

The course is designed to build awareness of the sports sector and develop the skills needed to work in it in the future. The knowledge gained and skills developed will allow students to progress to further learning and training, either on another Level 1 course, progressing onto Level 2 or applying for an apprenticeship.

If students wish to progress onto the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport they need to:

  • Complete BTEC Level 1 Sport with a Distinciton profile demonstating their ability to be independent learners
  • Have worked on improving their Literacy and Numeracy skills through the year
  • Have completed the Welsh Baccalaureate
  • Attend an interview

Additional information

All units in the course are internally assessed and are devised to enable students to demonstarte what they are capable of doing. A variety of methods are used to gather evidence for assessment:

  • Practical tasks
  • Presentations of information gatehred
  • Keeping working log books, records and refelctive journals
  • Taking part in oral or written presentations
  • Take part in role play, interviews and other activities

Asessments are graded on a scale of Distinction, Merit, Pass and Unclassified with the outcomes of each unit being added together to create a final grade for the course. The scale of grading refelcts not only the depth of content included or skill demonstrated, but also the level of independent study the learner has demonstrated.
