Is it for me?
Science for Public Understanding is offered for study at AS in Years 12 and 13 it is a two year course.

What do I need?
GCSE C grade or above in Science to begin the AS level preferably students will also have a C grade in English.

What will I study?
This AS consists of two units:
  • Unit 1: Biological issues in everyday life, eg:
    Genetics/genetic engineering cloning
    Alternative therapies
    Medical testing for new drugs
    Darwins theories on evolution
  • Unit 2: Physical and chemical issues in everyday life, eg:
    Electricity generation/fossil fuels
    Pollution
    Radiation/risks from various sources
    Coursework: this is a piece of work researched by students on a topic of their choosing and a book review.
Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.

Assessment
Each unit is examined with a paper 1½ hours in length consisting of structured questions and some extended writing.

How will I be taught?
This course is most successful with students who can express their views about controversial issues. It is a very useful AS level to broaden understanding and as an adjunct for students of arts subjects.

What qualification will I get?
AS Level Science for Public Understanding.

Can I go onto further study?
They may continue to study science subjects or they may study for other degrees. The course will have given them a chance to debate, research, and explore their own ideas.

Does it include key skills?
No.
