Is it for me?
The BTEC Nationals in Children's Care, Learning and Development (CCLD) are 2-year, full time courses, leading to a qualification as a Child Care Worker.
You will spend three days each week in college studying all aspects of child care, education and development and two days in a practical training placement.
You will complete 4 placements in a variety of childcare settings, working with children age 0-8 years. This means that it is an excellent progression route to employment or university.
A BTEC National Diploma is an ideal choice for school leavers who wish to develop a career working with young children. Applications from mature students are also welcome.
What do I need?
You will need to have one of the following:
- At least five GCSEs at grades A*-C including English
- A BTEC First Diploma in Early Years or Caring at merit grade or above and a level literacy qualification
- A CACHE Certificate in Childcare and Education at merit grade or above and a level 2 literacy qualification.
Please note that acceptance on to these courses is subject to a satisfactory police clearance and references. Further guidance will be given by the course team at interview or induction.
A criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to studying on this course, a number of factors will be taken in to consideration

Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.
How will I be assessed?
All units are assessed by a variety of assignment tasks. You will receive an overall grade for the qualification which gives qualified practitioner status as a level 3 Early Years Worker.
If you wish to go to university, there are UCAS points. There will be a maximum 440 UCAS points for the National Diploma and a maximum 320 UCAS points for the National Certificate.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught in classrooms and a specialist Early Years resource area. You will participate in group discussions, presentations, case studies, workshops and lectures.
What qualification will I get?
- BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development (Level 3)
- BTEC National Certificate in Children's Care, Learning and Development (Level 3)
The BTEC Nationals in CCLD are valued by employers and universities.
If you would like to do further study, you could apply to do:
- A degree in Teacher Training
- General or Paediatric Nurse Training
- A degree in a related subject such as Childhood Studies.
If you want to get a job straight away you could work in a variety of childcare settings including:
- Primary school
- Private Nursery
- Children's ward in a hospital.
If you are aged 16-18 and study on a full-time, further education programme then your course is free. Find out more about finance for 16-18 year olds.
