ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. It would be an advantage for a student to have prior knowledge of IT and to be proficient at the use of IT applications in order to support the method of delivery that the course takes.

Admittance onto this course of study remains at the discretion of the College based upon the above criteria.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The qualification is aimed at those who already possess basic knowledge and understanding of ICT systems and who wish to extend their knowledge and skills. It is suitable for those who are already employed in system support roles in the IT industry and who wish to develop further knowledge and skills to support and/or extend their work activities. The qualification will also meet the needs of those who are studying in preparation for roles that will involve system support activities.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The BTEC National Award for IT Practitioners (Networking) is ideal for those candidates who want to gain employment in the IT industry and those who already work in an IT role but want to improve their skills.

Designed with the needs of employers in mind, the qualification offers candidates the chance to take vendor specific units from Cisco. It also provides them with the chance to work towards system and network management.

The BTEC National Award for IT Practitioners (Networking) is unit based and develops knowledge, understanding and skills in the full range of functions involved in system support. It is also flexible, enabling candidates to achieve the full qualification or one or more individual units, according to their needs.

For a full award a candidate must achieve six units as follows (2 compulsory and 4 optional):

Compulsory modules are:
  • Unit 1: Communication and Employability Skills for IT
  • Unit 2: Computer Systems
Optional units could include:
  • IT Systems Troubleshooting and Repair
  • IT Support
  • CCNA CISCO Academy modules

HOW WILL I LEARN?
The methods that are employed are varied, the learning material is available on-line and this mode of delivery offers the student flexibility of study. In conjunction with the on-line learning material formal lectures will take place. There are also practical laboratory sessions that allow the students to put into practice what they have learnt. All laboratory sessions are held in a specialised computing suite. Work placement to assist in delivery of some units is found to be advantageous.

The method of assessment for the course is varied and all students must pass all of the assessments to complete the course. The modules have the following assessments:
  • Practical Examination, On-Line multiple choice test, Case study (theory of design and practical) for CISCO Academy modules
  • Written assignment for each of the other units 1
WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
Candidates on completion of this course could further expand their support skills by undertaking the MCSE course. Candidates may wish to take their qualifications further by enrolling on the Higher National Diploma in Computing.
