ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

The essential requirements are a student's ability, enthusiasm and drive to succeed combined with a certain academic ability. Typically, to obtain entry a student should have obtained: 5 GCSE passes at grades A, B or C (including Mathematics and a Science), a BTEC First qualification in Engineering (including Mathematics at Level 2), a GNVQ Intermediate in Engineering or the equivalent.

Mature students without entry requirements but with the relevant experience may be admitted to the course subject to successful interview and a level test.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The course is well suited to those currently working in industry, or anyone else, wishing to develop their skills in the field of engineering by part-time study.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course covers 11 units over two years

5 Core Units (compulsory):
  • Business Systems for Technicians
  • Communications for Technicians
  • Mathematics for Technicians
  • Project Mechanical
  • Mechanical Principles
6 Specialist Units, selected by the college from a possible 24, including, for example:
  • Engineering Materials
  • Mechanical Technology
  • Welding Processes Technology
  • Drawing and CAD for Technicians
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Thermodynamics
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Finishing and Secondary Processes
  • Engineering Workshop Practices
  • Primary Forming Processes
HOW WILL I LEARN?
The course is delivered one day a week for 36 weeks over three terms. There is a balanced programmes of lectures, directed private study, task based learning, laboratory practical work and assignments.

Performance is determined by means of class work, laboratory work and assignments. All modules are formally assessed and final grades, pass, merit or distinction, are subject to verification by the course team and a representative from the awarding body, BTEC Edexcel.

WHAT CAN THE COURSE LEAD TO?

Successful students can proceed to our own Higher National Diploma, Higher National Certificate courses or to university.
