This course is designed to enable you to:
· Develop scientific knowledge, understanding and skills
· Understand and appreciate the role of the science technician
· Develop practical skills in the laboratory
· Use ICT and numerical methods to present and interpret data
Is it for me?
You will study the basics of physics, chemistry, biology and maths, working in a laboratory in a science based environment. The course suits those who want to know more about the underlying world and those with a good imagination and problem solving skills. This two year full-time course is equivalent to 3 A levels. Assessment is coursework based.

Fundamentals of Science
Brush up on mole calculations, types of energy and cell structure. Explore working in the science industry, through laboratory practice and the development of practical techniques.
Microbiological Techniques
The unit on Physiology of Human Body Systems provides a firm foundation in the study of the human body and the major organ systems.
Energy Changes and Electrical Principles
Study the inter-conversion of energy and its practical applications. Construct circuits and take measurements. Understand the health and safety aspects of mains electricity.
Chemistry for Biology Technicians
Learn more about enthalpy changes, equilibrium systems and rates of reaction and study industrial organic chemistry.
Application of Numbers and Statistics for Science Technicians
Find out how to apply your maths to scientific situations.
Scientific Investigation
Plan, undertake, analyse and report on a scientific problem.
Perceptions of Science
This unit explores the development of scientific knowledge and the relationship between science, commerce and politics.
Biochemical Techniques, Genetics and Genetic Engineering
Learn about the structural characteristics used to classify biological molecules and the properties of enzymes, metabolic pathways and protein synthesis.
Medical Physics Techniques and Electronics for Science Technicians
You will develop your knowledge and understanding of patient diagnosis and treatments. You will also learn how to build and test analogue and digital circuits safely.
Chemical Laboratory Techniques and Industrial Applications of Chemical Reactions
This unit will develop your skills in using chemical tests and volumetric analysis. You will also consider the influence of enthalpy changes on chemical reactions, principles of chemical equilibrium and kinetics
Progression
You could follow a degree course in Science or take up employment in Laboratory work, Industry, Health Care or other jobs offering further training.
