You will study a range of units covering the health and education of children between one and seven years 11 months for three days a week in college. These units include:

You will develop your skills through work placement for two days per week working with children from one to seven years 11 months.

Key Skills will form part of your final qualifications.

Assessment
Individual assignment and project work including short answer questions and essays, case studies and work experienced based assignments. Individual and group presentations including creative and practical work. All units will be graded at pass, merit or distinction level. Points will also be awarded to give an overall grade for the Diploma. All units are internally assessed.

Progression
This course will prepare you for entry into early years employment, or for higher education courses including initial teaching training, Nursing and Social Science Degrees. On completion of the course you will have a broad child care foundation for employment and careers in education, social services and the health service.

Work Experience
This is a compulsory work placement experience requirement of 800 hours. The Professional Practice Unit will be wholly assessed through work placement experience. Students must undertake assessed work placement experience with children in all three age ranges, 0-1 year, 2-4 years and 5-8 years. This will include four of the following settings: the home, child minder-voluntary pre-school-statutory pre-school-private nursery provision-nursery school/class-primary school-hospital-special needs provision.
