WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The course has been developed to focus on any individual wishing to pursue employment with the Health & Social Care sector or who wish to access Higher Education (HE). You need to be prepared to study independently and challenge yourself to achieve high standards of success.
This is an advanced level course and achievement at Distinction attracts 360 UCAS points.
*Please note: Many Universities require evidence of GCSE English Maths and probably Science at grade C or above in addition to Distinction at level 3. Equivalent level 2 qualifications in these subjects may not be accepted by the University of your choice.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will benefit from gaining a number of core units as well as a wide range of specialist units. You will also benefit from gaining work experience in a range of Health & Social Care settings. These opportunities will aid career choices and potentially attract learners into the health & social care professions.
The course is made up of 13 core units and plus a range of specialist units some examples of these units are:-

HOW WILL I LEARN?
The course lends itself to creative delivery, using learners work experience as the focal point and enabling learning to be as active, practical and work-related as possible. Alongside this, it provides robust opportunities for learners to gain knowledge and understanding of a wide range of subject areas relating to health and social care. A key feature is also the opportunity throughout the duration of the programme for learners to produce a personal and professional development portfolio, which links many aspects of their programme, as well as experiences outside the programme.
We strive to ensure a varied and diverse curriculum and you will be involved in a variety of enrichment activities. We organise various trips throughout the year for example; UKSA, Headhunters and Thorpe Park. We also have a variety of guest speakers who visit the department such as specialist nurses, midwives and representatives from Camp America. We also take an active part in fund raising for both local and national causes.
WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
Students who have completed in the past have entered further training or study, into careers such as social work, residential care management, housing, nursing, ambulance service, teaching, the probation service, psychology, physiotherapy and midwifery. Alternatively, students may enter employment within the Health and Social Care sector as a nursing auxiliary, social work assistant, classroom assistant or a care assistant in a residential home.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
During your workplace experience you will be working with children and vulnerable people; which will mean that you are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974). Criminal Record Bureau checks will therefore be necessary for all candidates.
Additional costs for this course are applicable to cover textbooks, stationary materials, a placement uniforms and college trips. You will be informed of these costs at interview.

- A minimum of five GCSEs at grades A star to C. These must include English Language, Maths and ideally Science.*
- BTEC First Diploma in a related subject at Distinction level and GCSEs (or level 2 equivalent*) at grades C or above in English and Maths.*
- An interview which involves a presentation by staff, individual and group activities and a 1:1 interview with a member of the Health & Social Care team.
- Two appropriate references, a CRB check and appropriate work experience
