About this course
You will need at least 5 GCSEs in the A*-C range, including English and Maths, or an appropriate Level 2 qualification accompanied by GCSEs in Maths and English grades A*-C or
equivalent (for example Functional Skills Level 2 in Communication and Application of Number). Some riding
skills are essential and before starting the course you will be given a riding assessment.

This course includes a range of practical and theoretical units which
cover most aspects of an equine business. You will have plenty of
opportunity to develop your riding and horse husbandry skills so that you are well prepared to work in the equine industry. The theory units provide you with a sound knowledge of horse anatomy, health, nutrition and breeding as well as covering legislation and business studies. You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These will include Functional Skills qualifications in Numeracy, Literacy and IT and can also include more specialist awards that are relevant to the subject you are studying. You will be encouraged to train for and take
British Horse Society (BHS) examinations and it is possible to take
additional GCSEs alongside this course.

This course is assessed on a continuous basis through a combination of practical work and written coursework.

Progression
On successful completion of this course you may have the opportunity to progress to one of a wide range of equine degree courses. This can include the Foundation Degree in
Horse Management at Weston College, which is run in partnership with the University of the West of England or an equine degree in Equine Science, Nursing or Dentistry
or go directly into employment in the equine industry.
Achieving this Apprenticeship will give you the equivalent of 3
A Levels and provide entry to degree level courses.
