What is Media Production?
This is a practical course for those who wish to work in the media industry. The world of film, television and radio is continually changing and there is a need to develop skilled, confident practitioners for the digital age. BTEC assignments are based on realistic work-place scenarios which will develop your practical and personal skills as well as giving you valuable knowledge about the way the media industries work.
Is Media Production suitable for me?
If you are committed to working in the media the BTEC offers an exciting way to develop the necessary skills and knowledge for your chosen career. The course is structured around a series of projects: assessment is continuous rather than exam based. You will need to enjoy working in teams, using your initiative and working independently.
How will I learn?
Learning happens in a variety of ways: through class-room based lessons, workshop activities, independent study and, where possible, work-placements. The course requires a high level of commitment and flexibility. You will be encouraged to experience a wide range of roles and responsibilities. As well as creating TV programmes and films using professional-standard media equipment you will also develop important life-skills such as time-management and effective team-work.
How will I be assessed?
The course consists of 18 Units which are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. All students take the following five core units: Research Techniques, Pre-production techniques, Working to a Brief, Critical Approaches to Media Products, and a Production Management Project. All students also complete the specialist unit, Understanding the Media Industries. These units are internally assessed and externally moderated.
The remaining specialist units include a wide range of topics such as Single Camera Techniques, Music Video, Soundtrack Production and Film Editing. Students complete twelve specialist units. These units are internally assessed and moderated.
At the end of the course you will receive three grades which reflect your achievement across all 18 units (for example PPP, MMD, DDD).
Progression
The BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to 3 A Levels. When you finish the course you could progress to a Higher National Diploma or a degree course at University. Alternatively, you may choose to go straight into employment.
