Introduction 2 years full-time
This course offers you a challenging and stimulating introduction to this expanding field. You will get a good grounding in a range of skills used in a number of media-related areas including television, film, radio, magazine and web publishing and advertising. The course is based around moving image production and you will all plan and produce television, video and film productions both in studios and on location. At interview, you will be asked to decide upon additional options either in audio or publishing. You will take units in these options alongside your moving image work.
The production work is accomplished using excellent facilities including a digital television studio, digital radio studio, dedicated digital video and audio editing suites and a digital stills imaging suite. You will also learn about, and practise, the vital media skills of managing productions, working in teams, researching, pitching ideas, presenting and interviewing. In the theory units that are central to the course, you will learn how to analyse, research and discuss media products, media audiences and media industries.

Assessment Students are assessed entirely through coursework assignments, including the planning and production of an advertising campaign, live television broadcasting and a week-long location assignment in Cornwall producing films and documentaries. If you undertake the publishing pathway, you will design a number of print and digital imaging products such as a fanzine, a website and a college magazine. Those taking the audio options will produce entertainment and factual radio shows including radio dramas and live music shows. The theory elements of the coursework assignments are assessed through a combination of essays, presentations and written or verbal self-evaluations. The course will end with a final major project bringing together all that you have learnt about professional media production, working with a degree of independence as a production company. You will be asked to research, manage and produce a factual programme, drawing upon first-hand sources for your material in the wider community or geographical region.
