Is it for me?
This course is ideal if you eventually want to move into higher education to study the design and construction of motor vehicles with motorsport bias - or join a motorsport team.
What do I need?
GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths, or appropriate work experience at the discretion of the course leader.
What will I study?
The BTEC National Diploma in Motorsport is now in its second year with a cohort of first year students progressing into their second year, and a new group starting their first year.
A major part of the course involves learning the fundamentals of vehicle technology including:
  • engine technology and principles
  • chassis systems
  • electrical theory
  • transmissions
  • mathematics with science for technicians
The second year takes you onto a more advanced level of applied mathematics and science, fuel injection, engine management, electronic principles, starting and charging and fault diagnosis and rectification.
In your first year
The first year has two motorsport units which deal with motorsport working practices and motorsport vehicle preparation and inspection. You'll be able to attend motorsport events arranged by the College to enable you to complete this part of the course. You'll also get valuable experience in our workshops which will include vehicle set-up and set-down on our own vehicles.
In your second year
In your second year, attendance at events is also expected and you will also complete another two specific motorsport units. One gives an insight into the logistics of motorsport team transportation and accommodation, media involvement and the implications of sponsorship. In addition you will undertake and complete a motorsport specific project which will run through this second year.
Gateshead College has formed links with Croft Racing circuit near Darlington and 888 Britcar racing team who will add their experience and expertise during the 2009/2010 season. Two of our lecturers are actively involved in motorsport and have a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience which will give you the opportunity to make your own contacts within the sport.
The qualification that you achieve will give you the opportunity of progression into university or the practical aspects of working with a motorsport team.
You will study level 3 motor vehicle technology with a motorsport bias. In addition specific motorsport knowledge including vehicle inspection, motorsport working practice, logistics and business planning involved in a professional team and mechanical principles covering stresses within a modern vehicle. You will be expected to attend weekend race meetings and events during the course.
Where will I study?

Based on Team Valley our centre has top of the range equipment including; state-of-the-art driving simulators, MOT testing equipment, a rolling road, specialist diagnostic equipment, spray booths and a dedicated welding workshop.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a combination of written assignments, practical tasks, presentations and witness statements.
How will I be taught?
You will learn through classroom lectures, demonstration of vehicle set-up, group tasks, written end tests and self expression during group sessions.
What qualification will I get?
On successful completion of the course you will achieve a National Diploma in Motorsport with optional progression onto a National Diploma in Motorsport.
Can I go on to further study?
This course could lead you onto University or into a motorsport team.

This is a high level course with the potential to develop your career within all areas of motorsport.
