Who is this course for?
This qualification is for anyone looking to progress, from GCSE, BTEC first Diploma or equivalent qualifications. It is also for those wish to gain a qualification by using their past and/or present work experience and learning, or those who wish to work within the Electrical / Refrigeration / Building Services industry or anyone wishing to progress onto higher education.
What are the entry requirements?
Ideally you will have a BTEC First qualification in Engineering or a related vocational area, or an NVQ2, Intermediate GNVQ in an appropriate vocational area, or GCSE equivalent; four passes at grade C, or other related Level 2 qualifications, or related work experience. You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. Also, your previous achievements and experiences through APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning), and evidence that has been generated during previous study or in your previous or current employment or whilst undertaking voluntary work, will be recognised.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
- Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2
- Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear. Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2
Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.
What qualification will I receive?
You will need to complete 18 units to receive a BTEC National Diploma.
Where can it lead?
This could lead to a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) or to entry to the University to obtain Degree in related subjects.
What will I study?
Health & Safety, environment, maths, building services, science, services control, refrigeration, air-conditioning, electrical. You need to complete 6 core Units and 12 specialist units (see edexcel.org.uk) to gain full certification. The additional specialist units are divided into refrigeration / air conditioning/ electrical, depending on which pathway you choose.

You will be taught through a mixture of theory and practical sessions.

You will be assessed through the completion of assignments.
