About this course

You must be aged 16 or over and not in full-time education or on any other training programme. You also need to have lived in the UK for the past three years.

There are no formal entry requirements for any level, however the employer may stipulate entry qualifications when recruiting an apprentice to a particular job role.



Students will be expected to have a contract to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. This must be paid employment. However, you can still apply for this course if you are actively seeking employment, but this must be in place before you can commence the training.

Course programme

Year 1

The course involves a BTEC 12 Unit Diploma taken in college and an NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations taken in the workplace and English and maths at level 2 if required. This course would benefit junior technicians employed in the construction industry. On completion, you will receive a generic technician qualification alongside your NVQ Diploma. You will learn about health, safety and environmental issues faced on construction sites, and how to communicate with others on the job. You will also learn practical skills specific to brickwork, including how to build and repair structures, walls, chimneys, walkways and foundations using various types of blocks and brick. Their work can range from a house extension to a major stadium project
This course covers the following units: health safety and welfare in construction and the built environment, sustainable construction, maths in construction and the built environment, science and materials in construction, construction technology and design in construction, building technology in construction, project management in construction, graphical detailing in construction, measuring, estimating and tendering processes, surveying in construction, building surveying and building regulations.

Year 2

Within the second year you will complete your practical assessments and also focus on completing your competencies within your NVQ portfolio. This will be your responsibility to complete your job knowledge questions and also ensure that you cover the range of work required for your assessor to observe you in your working environment.

Additional information

This apprenticeship will be covered through on-site assessments and a completion of your portfolio. You will also be required to complete a series of assignments after you have been taught your technical knowledge.
