Large businesses will employ hundreds of people in departments dedicated to things like marketing and human resources; smaller employers will often look for people with a rounded skillset in the effective and profitable operation of their business. 99.3% of all private sector businesses are small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who require employees with multiple business skills in order to run. These SMEs have a combined annual turnover of £1.8 trillion.As business is such a varied sector, there are many career pathways for you to consider. Our previous students have embarked on exciting careers in a broad range of business areas e.g. marketing, finance, sales and human resources. Some students may also choose to start their own businesses. The number of under-35s starting businesses has risen by more than 70% over the last decade – with many start-ups focussed on the digital market. Higher education is another pathway to consider and NHC programmes are the ideal step to degree programmes such as management and accounting.Our programmes will develop your business skills in a variety of ways. Programmes will focus on the following key skill areas required in both large-scale organisations and SMEs:We will ensure that you gain the know-how and confidence to succeed in today’s fast-paced business environment. At our Hitchin Campus, you will be taught by experienced tutors and learn job-ready skills through interactive lessons, e-learning tasks, course work, practical assignments and project-based activities with other students based on real life business scenarios.

Course programme

You will have the opportunity to undertake work experience at globally recognised companies such as Fujitsu and hear from guest speakers with different areas of expertise within business. Moreover, our business department offers a broad array of extracurricular activities that will further sharpen your business skills, for instance design challenges with the food chain Subway, community initiatives with the National Citizen Service (NCS) and even enterprise tasks at local farms.



  • Business: our business programmes aim to give you a 360˚ understanding of how businesses function. Areas of study include the business environment, resources and human resources, marketing and communication, the economy, customer service, accounting, websites, teamwork and recruitment, as well as ethics and law.
  • Marketing: programmes give you a deeper insight into promoting and marketing a business, company finance and accounting, business applications, e-businesses and global businesses, as well as managing people.
  • Human resource management: our programmes will develop your professional and employability skills by giving you a better understanding of business functions, business application, as well as business ethics and law to aid in the recruitment, training, performance management and support of employees.
  • Accounting: you will enhance your knowledge of how businesses function from a financial perspective. This will include looking at a variety accounting, budgeting, expenses and payment models used by both small and large enterprises.
  • Information systems: these programmes focus on systems that are designed and implemented in order to help businesses run smoothly by collating, analysing and using information such as client profiles, product popularity and pricing, as well as competitor information.
