BSc (Hons) Business Intelligence focuses on developing solutions for real-world problems associated with the changing nature of IT infrastructure and increasing volumes of data. Therefore the concept of Business intelligence (BI) is increasingly becoming critical in a range of industries to provide a competitive advantage and opportunities. Through exploring a range of technologies such as Cloud Computing and Machine Learning, students will gain a greater understanding of technological advances, and how these relate to ‘Big Data’ and how data influences the decision making processes for businesses. From this degree, students will gain skills in the latest cutting edge subjects and technologies which will give skills and experience that can be transferable across different sectors.

Staff at The University of Wolverhampton are fully engaged in research projects and working with industry. About this course

The BSc (Hons) Business Intelligence degree provides graduates with the essentials to equip them in industry. Graduates will have the ability to demonstrate a range of transferrable skills in problem solving, communication, project management, working individually and in teams, self-management and the ability to gather, evaluate and reflect on information to support the decision making process through applying full understanding, knowledge and experience of the principles of Business Intelligence.

2019 Entry

A Level minimum of AA or CCC.
BTEC QCF Extended Diploma grade MMM, BTEC QCF Diploma grade DD
Access to HE Diploma full award (Pass of 60 credits - of which a minimum of 45 credits must be at level 3 including 18 at Merit or Distinction).

Course programme

Year One

During year one you will learn about the fundamentals of business operations and the importance of businesses understanding their data in order to implement suitable analytics, strategies for growth and efficient decision making. Themes that will be covered will include Big Data, Cloud Computing, Programme and Problem Solving, Financial Analysis and Information Management and Security in Business, and Collaboration Projects.

Year Two

In the second year, you will cover subjects in more depth and gain more hands on practical experience of using technology to support business decisions through understanding data processing and interpreting of data. This will be through using Machine Learning Technologies, understanding the importance of Operational Research, how Social Media and E-Marketing provide Big Data and influence businesses as well as gaining experience of Computing and Security Architectures and Business Continuity Planning

Year Three

In your third year, you will further develop and apply knowledge and experience of a range of different applications and various technologies, techniques, tools and methods in relation to Business Intelligence. Themes covered in this year will influence and support your final year project module and include Advanced and Predictive Analytics software, Mobile applications, Analytics and Big Data Management, Digital Business Strategy and Data Mining

Optional Placement Year

The University of Wolverhampton is keen to ensure graduates have both the academic and work based skills required in industry. Graduates have the options of a placement in industry between levels two and three. The results in a four year length degree which gives graduates an award of BSc (Hons) with sandwich.

Though our up to data teaching laboratories students will gain experience and knowledge through both theoretical instruction and practical activities. Students will gain experience of using Business Intelligence analysis software such as SAS ,Logi Analytics, SPSS. As the activities within Business Intelligence deal with online analytical processing (OLAP), students will use different technologies such as Cloud Computing and Databases for the purpose of gathering data for statistical analysis, forecasting, data analytics and data mining to aid the decision making process.
