Business Studies (BTEC Introductory)
Level: Level 1 Foundation
Awarding Body: EDEXCEL
Course Content:
The BTEC Introductory course gives the student an introduction to the central areas of business. The range of the course will cover:
- Unit 1: Starting work in Business, retail and admin
- Unit 2: Working in business, retail and admin
- Unit 3: Introducing customer service
- Unit 5: Social responsibility at work
- Unit 6: Financial management
- Unit 8: Communicating effectively at work
- Unit 9: Introduction to retail
- Unit 11: Work experience
Equally important is the development of the student's skills in communication, information technology and numeracy. This will be achieved through the delivery of a Key Skills programme run throughout the year.
Teaching Learning Methods:
Students will be expected to produce eight written assignments, which will make up a portfolio of evidence. Assignments will usually be produced individually, but each student will also be expected to participate in group assignments, field research including contact with employers and advisors, and give presentations. They will not be required to sit any external tests. There are three different grades, which can be awarded to students on completion of the Intermediate course: Distinction, Merit, Pass.
Key Skills:
All students will be given the opportunity to develop the key skill of Information Technology.
Skills & Commitment:
Students will be expected to have a genuine interest in business and finance. They will need to work hard, attend regularly and be able to meet deadlines. Students should be prepared to work in groups, and to take the initiative in conducting their own research.
Progression:
Successful completion of this course to a merit standard could lead to qualification for the BTEC First award that we also run here at the college. Progression from level 1 to level 2 is very good.
Youth Training:
There are a range of training opportunities available for students who complete the programme and achieve a pass.
In addition, there are opportunities for employment within the area for Business Studies. Offices of all kinds employ junior administrative and secretarial staff, and it is often possible to progress within an organisation. Good communication and keyboard skills are usually required, along with a good level of English and often Maths.
