Byzantine Studies MRes

MRes programmes offer a unique opportunity to deepen and develop your knowledge of the subject by combining taught elements with research training and an independent research project.

You will study one core module:

This module provides an introduction to predominant research methodologies in Byzantine studies. You are given introductory training in a variety of subject areas, such as historical writing, charters and documents, art history, numismatics, epigraphy and sigillography. Emphasis is placed on the primary sources and the analytical and bibliographical skills required for interpreting narrative, documentary and material evidence relating to the Byzantine past.
Assessment: Four 1,000-word essays

You will then choose two optional modules from a range which typically includes:

• Aspects of Byzantine History
• Byzantine Archaeology and Material Culture
• Byzantine Art and Architecture
• Greek (Beginner/Advanced)
• The Economies of the Late Roman, Byzantine and Frankish East

You also have the option of taking a Modern Language, chosen in consultation with the Programme Convenor.

Taught modules are typically assessed by written assignment. You will also complete a 20,000-word thesis on a topic of your choice, with support from a supervisor.
