About this course

Entry requirements: Candidates will need to have achieved a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing or barbering together with the necessary personal qualities required by the hair and beauty industry. All applicants will be interviewed and cover an initial assessment in an industry related task. The required literacy and numeracy skills are Entry 3 or working towards a level 1. Learners under 19 years of age will need to complete functional skills or GCSE depending on qualifications already achieved.

Overview of the course:

This qualification is intended to provide an understanding of the sector and the vocational skills and knowledge required for Level 2 Hairdressing/Barbering. Skills will be developed during real work activities in the salon environment. It will also provide an awareness of the range of jobs and work settings in the sector and will enable candidates to make informed decisions about careers in the sector.

Learners interested in the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

Compulsory topics include:

• Principles of practice of hairdressing
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
• Style, set and dress hair
• Cut hair using basic techniques
• Colour and lighten hair
36 hours work experience in a salon

Additional information

Further study options after this course:
Candidates who successfully achieve this qualification and are in employment or who have access to work placements could progress to an apprenticeship or the Level 3 NVQ in Hairdressing or Barbering.
