Entry requirements: Direct Entry: 5 x GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Maths, English and Science.Progressive entry: Level 2 diploma in animal care and a minimum of level 1 maths and English. Attendance at 85%+ for previous year and satisfactory standards of behaviour.

Overview of the course:

The course runs over 2 years with successful completion of year 1 resulting in you achieving a Level 3 subsidiary diploma in animal management. The second year ensures you will gain credits to achieve the Level 3 extended diploma in animal management. You will cover a mixture of theory and practical topics and get hands-on experience working in the Houghall animal unit. The unit houses a variety of animals from rabbits and guinea pigs, exotics, small 'furries', cats, dogs and ferrets. You will also have opportunity to learn new skills working on the farm at Houghall with a variety of different breeds of sheep, pigs and cows.

Year 1 (Subsidiary Diploma) - Animal health, animal biology, practical animal handling and husbandry, feeding and accommodation, kennel and cattery, exotic animal husbandry, animal behaviour, animal biology, biochemistry and work-related experience.
Year 2 (Extended Diploma) - Anatomy and physiology, farm livestock, wildlife and rehabilitation, microbiology, breeding and genetics, breed development and welfare, and ecology.
