Course programme
Overview of the course:
The course runs over 2 years with successful completion of year 1 resulting in you achieving a Level 3 subsidiary diploma in forestry and arboriculture. The second year ensures you will gain credits to achieve the Level 3 extended diploma in forestry and arboriculture. You will cover a mixture of theory and practical topics and get hands-on experience working on the Houghall estate and external sites. You will also be given the opportunity to train for certificates in competency to improve your employability skills.

Topics covered in the course: Maths & English, Health and safety and safe working practices, Work experience, tree climbing, chainsaw use, pests and diseases, tree surveys, woodland ecology and management, business, tree pruning and arboriculture skills, machinery and science.
Additional information
Following successful completion of the course, progression options include the level 4 diploma in arboriculture, or qualifications in Horticulture or Environmental Conservation. Apprenticeship routes are also available at Level 3 in forestry and arboriculture.
