Who is this for?
If you are an existing child care worker or an adult new to the child care and education sector.

What Will I Learn?
You will learn how to support the class teacher of children of any age in primary, secondary or special schools. The Level 3 Certificate also covers the support of pupils with particular learning needs.

Content of the Course
This course will suit you if you have completed a CACHE Level 2 Certificate or CACHE NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and are already working in a school as a volunteer or teaching assistant or if you are an adult new to the childcare and education sector but have previously gained GCSES at C grade or above. You may also be an existing child care worker who wishes to move to work in a school. You will learn how to work with pupils individually or in groups under the supervision of a teacher in teaching and learning support.
You can work in primary or secondary settings. Assessment is by one internally marked assignment and one externally marked assignment. You should also be prepared to undertake a voluntary or paid work placement of at least 120 hours in a school setting during the course. Varndean College can advise you on this, if necessary.
When you have successfully completed this course you will be able to apply for teaching assistant jobs at an appropriate level.
To enter you must be at least 18 years of age with GCSES or equivalent at C grade. (It is preferable if you have gained GCSES in English and Mathematics at grade C). However, Literacy and Numeracy courses are available through the college if necessary. You will also need a recent CRB check which is normally carried out through your placement but can be obtained through Varndean College. Please note that entry to this course involves completion of a CACHE course application form available online or from the Adult Education Office.

You should also be prepared to undertake a paid or voluntary work placement of 120 hours in a school setting. Varndean College can help you find a voluntary placement, if necessary.
