Is it for me?
This award is for anyone who wants to work as a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant, Learning Support assistant or Special needs Assistant in a variety of settings such as primary, Secondary and Special Schools. It replaces the Cache certificate for Teaching Assistants qualification.

What do I need?
You must be at least 16years of age and have a GCSE or equivalent at C grade or above.
You will need to be working in a school at Foundation Stage, or key stages 1-4, for the whole period of the qualification. It is expected that a teaching assistant at this level has a wide range of responsibilities within the school. This can be as a paid employee or volunteer.
College requires candidates to complete a minimum of 80% teaching time in college.
Candidates should have at least one years experience working with children.
You should have or be working towards a Level 2 Qualification in literacy and numeracy.
Knowledge of ICT skills is preferred.
All candidates must have a current Criminal Records Bureau Check (CRB) which is less than 3months old at the start of the course.
A fee of £37 must be paid at enrolment.

  • How the support workers role contributes to teaching and learning.
  • How to respond to positive behaviour.
  • How pupil's learn and develop.
Where will I study?
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed using a reflective log book to show that you have achieved the assessment criteria along with a 2,000 word essay based on evidence and information within the log.

How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching styles including the use of ICT, Moodle etc

What qualification will I get?
A CACHE Level 3 certificate for Teaching Assistants which is recognised as the technical certificate for the apprenticeship framework at Level 3 and is a nationally recognised qualification.

Can I go onto further study?
You may want to progress on to a higher level qualification such as Level 4 qualifications, subject to individual university or higher education college requirements.

Does it include key skills?
Support classes may be offered to allow candidates to work towards a level 2 Key skills qualification in literacy and numeracy.
