Specific entry requirements for the course are: A minimum of a lower second class honours degree from a UK university or its equivalent in a biological discipline, for example Biochemistry, Physiology, Biomedical Science. A qualification or experience deemed to be equivalent to the above.

Programme at a Glance Year 1

Social, Ethical and Legal Aspects of Cancer Therapy: Addresses the social impact of cancer, diagnosis and therapy together with legal issues relating to clinical trials.

Research and Laboratory Skills: Includes development of research skills and introduction to a range of advanced laboratory techniques to allow planning of your research project.

Cancer Biology: Looks at the development of malignancy and the role of stem cells; possible triggers of cancer, molecular biology and tumour immunology.

Drug Design and Delivery: Examines the development and synthesis of new drugs and their effects; current chemotherapies; radiotherapy and surgery; drug delivery systems and strategies; photodynamic therapy; anti-angiogenic therapy. This module also examines the cancer genome and the development of gene therapy.

Research Project: Housed in the dedicated postgraduate biomedical research laboratories.

The course is offered on a one year full time basis, taught over three terms. It includes six taught modules in the first two terms in which all lecture material will be provided on our VLE to enable access.

A research project occupies the whole of the third term in order to allow you to conduct a detailed investigation into a particular aspect of cancer biology or therapy of your choice.

The course also includes guest lecturers from Royal Preston Hospital, including: Consultant Neurosurgeons; Consultant Immunologists; Consultant Oncologists and Consultant Neuropathologists, who will give lectures on their personal experiences and their work within the NHS.
