The current UK MoD view on Capability and the need to develop agile, resilient, network enabled capability solutions is discussed. The relevance of SoS concepts and the reasons they are needed to enable the top down management of Defence Capability are discussed.  In particular, how do ideas of Programme and Portfolio Management and Enterprise Architecture apply to defence. The course considers the key relationships between System of Systems, or Capability, Engineering and Defence Acquisition.

Course programme

Course structure The course is run once each year. Each course lasts for 5 days. The course is delivered through a range of learning styles (including on-line material accessed via the DA Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)); directed Study (e.g. lectures, case studies, group practical exercises and workshops); and support by self-directed study, including reading, self-study exercises and debate. The course is split into pre and post study tasks.
What you will learn Understand how Defence Capability can be understood and engineered as a System of Systems as part of the Systems Engineering for Defence Capability MSc. Outcomes:

Knowledge

  • Interpret System Engineering Lifecycle in the context of capability
  • Assess the trade-off and legacy issues which affect capability requirements
  • Examine how capability requirements can be interpreted at the programme and project level
  • Consider the purpose of architectures and architecture frameworks in a capability context.

Skills

  • Apply SE methods to allocate capability functional views to physical systems views
  • Assess the implications for acquisition in using a system of systems approach to capability Indicative Content.
