Since it is a question of the professionalism of the career diplomat is multifaceted, which performs various functions, it is not possible to define it in a few lines. In an extremely synthetic way, we could say that the diplomat is concerned with promoting the interests of his country in an international scenario and managing relations with other states and various international organizations. His role has changed considerably over time; today he is not concerned with mediating only in the political field, but intervenes in a multiplicity of other areas. He is mainly concerned with identifying, defining and promoting the national interest, both in the political, economic and social spheres. For example, his responsibilities include that of providing services to individuals, Italians and foreigners, both in Italy and abroad. In this case we speak of 'service diplomacy', or an activity that provides services aimed at satisfying the needs linked to the mobility of Italians; both of those who move as tourists and of those who instead expatriate. In the field of services for people, the diplomat protects his compatriots who are abroad, both for what concerns emergency situations and for administrative matters, such as the issuing of visas and the right to vote. In foreign offices, the diplomat collects information that may be useful for the national interest, in particular for the development of friendly relations between Italy and the State in which he operates. The analysis and understanding of the reality of the foreign country make it possible to identify possible profitable international actions and cooperation on a commercial and / or cultural level. The expert profile of diplomacy must therefore be skilled in reading and interpreting the reality that surrounds him, and the relative evolutions, in order to seize any opportunities and potential.
