The Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship course is designed to give you the relevant training and education required to become a successful site carpenter or bench joiner. Practical and theory sessions at the College are teamed with work-based experience and training in order to achieve a Diploma alongside an NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry or Joinery.

About this course


Candidates should have a strong interest in the area of Carpentry or Joinery. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. You will be required to attend an interview with the work based learning team and be asked to complete basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy. You will also be required to pass a Construction Skills Trade Aptitude Test. Students on this course are required to be employed in a suitable work placement with a Carpentry or Joinery company.

Course programme



The Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship course is designed to give you the relevant training and education required to become a successful site carpenter or bench joiner. Practical and theory sessions at the College are teamed with work-based experience and training in order to achieve a Diploma alongside an NVQ Level 2 in Carpentry or Joinery.



Course Content

The course covers:



  • Basic Woodworking Skills

  • Aspects of Timber Technology

  • Health and Safety


Site work includes:



  • Doors, Lining, Frames, Skirting and Architrave

  • Windows and Staircases

  • Studwork, Pipe Casting, Floor Joists and Trussed Rafter Roofs


Bench work includes:



  • Doors and Door Linings

  • Door and Window Frames

  • Staircases and Storage Units


As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.

ensuring you complete section 4 of the form. In order to start your apprenticeship you must have an employer
ready to complete your apprenticeship with.
