Course programme



The largest proportion of workers within the industry are engaged in craft occupations. All of these require self-motivation, skills in numeracy, communications and problem solving, as well as a broad range of technical skills. Therefore whilst at college you will be expected to undertake one functional skill per year which will help in the preparation into employment.




General Core Units:


Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction – Reinforce theoretical knowledge based around the Construction Industry taught in Level 1.


Principles of Building Construction Information and Communication –Underpinning theoretical knowledge based on the understanding collation of technical information, quantities and the importance of communicating with others in the Construction Industry.


Carry out First Fix Operations – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the production of, constructing, assembling and fitting timber partitions, door lining, flat roofs, floors, stairs and handrails using hand tools and portable power tools.


Carry out Second Fix Operations – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding how to assemble and fit kitchen units, encasements, doors, locks, architraves and skirting using Carpentry & Joinery hand tools and portable power tools.


Carry out Structural Carcassing Operations – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding how to construct, assemble and fit floor joists, strutting, roof trusses, fascia and soffit using Carpentry & Joinery hand tools and portable power tools.


Carry out Maintenance to Non-Structural Carpentry Work – Underpinning theoretical and practical knowledge regarding how to maintain and repair timber mouldings and gutters using Carpentry & Joinery hand tools and portable power tools.


Setup and Operation of a Circular Saw – Practical and theoretical knowledge of circular saw usage and maintenance.


This course also includes tutorials, Functional Skills such as English and Maths and Personal and Professional Development.
