Who is this course for? The course is designed for those wanting to gain employment within the construction industry. Learners usually progress into employment undertaking Foundation Modern Apprenticeship.

Previous knowledge required: A sound secondary education and related qualifications are desirable; acceptance will depend on the outcomes of successful interview and initial guidance. Motivation and interest are key requirements. To partake in Foundation Modern apprenticeship, you will have to pass a Construction Skills entry test and those wishing to do so will need to apply directly to Construction Skills. Applications from Mature students are welcome.

What will I study? You will study: practical craft skills; job Knowledge and trade techniques; the interpretation of construction drawings; the calculattion of materials and costings and Key Skills Communications and Application of number.

What else will I do? You will also study: Emergency First Aid; Health and Safety training and work placement for those following the Apprenticeship Programme.

How will I be assessed? Students will be assessed through practical assessments a computerised multi choice test.

What will I achieve? You will achieve a Foundation Construction Diploma; City and guild Basic Certificate in your particular trade; Key skills and Emergency First Aid

What can I do afterwards? Students normally complete the City and Guilds Basic trade skills Certificate in their particular craft area and the Foundation Diploma in their chosen craft within the first year. When progressing onto year two, the course is day release with part block release. At the end of year two, the students usually achieve NVQ level 2 in their craft and the Intermediate Construction Diploma. The third year is again part time and block release with students gaining NVQ level 3 and the Advanced Construction Diploma in their craft. To gain an NVQ the candidate will produce site based evidence to prove they are competent at working in their craft. Students not intending to undertake Modern apprenticeships can study NVQ and/or Construction awards.
