Course Aims:
To allow students to acquire an in-depth knowledge of Ceramics and/or Glass through structured assignments and personal experimentation whilst developing an understanding of the creative and technical potential and limitations of appropriate materials and processes. The course will also provide appropriate graphical skills, problem-solving competence and technical expertise in relation to the design, making and evalutation of objects while promoting awareness of the relationship between form, function, maker and user
Course Content:
Processes related to Ceramic and Glass including: Handbuilding, Coiling, Slab Building, Press Moulding, Throwing, Modelling, Surface Decoration, Colouring Techniques, Glaze Application, Slumping, Fusing, Kiln Cast Glass, Mould Making, Slip Casting. The course consists of four units: Explore and Use of Materials, Investigate Sources of Ideas, Develop Ideas and Approaches, Produce Final Work.
Progression:
Southport College offers a range of Art & Design programmes at different levels from NCFE and GCSE through to 'A' Levels and BTEC Diplomas, including a first year Degree course in Fine Art. This Ceramics/Glass course will enable you to develop your practical skills and technical experience, either to progress onto further appropriate Art & Design programmes or as an end in itself to extend your knowledge and practice in a particularly rewarding area.
