This course is designed for learners aged 18 years and over and prepares learners to work with children between birth and 5 years (with knowledge of children up to 7 years). The qualification will enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills needed when working in the early years sector including professional practice, legislation and frameworks and child development.

About this course

You should have / be working towards GCSEs in maths and English at grade D or above. At a minimum you must be able to demonstrate positive communication skills and effective levels of reading, writing sufficient to meet the requirements of this training. All applicants must undertake an interview and apply for DBS clearance to demonstrate that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working with young people or vulnerable adults. What will I study on the course?

A range of units related to the role of an early years practitioner, child development and play and legislative requirements, split into four themes;

Theme 1- Introducing the role of the early years practitioner

Theme 2 Legislation, framework and professional practice

Theme 3 Play, development and learning for school readiness

Theme 4 Professional development

Additional information

The course runs for 1 half day per fortnight over 1 year. As an adult work-based learner you will be expected to attend all sessions and use the information given to further research independently and complete work to progress through your award. You will also be expected to access our VLE (virtual learning environment) to further support your studies. In addition you will be required to undertake 1 - 2 days placement per week to gain the essential skills to support your award (250 recommended placement hours).
