This course is for individuals who may be preparing for a new career in information technology or already working in IT and wanting to upgrade their skills and knowledge. The course is for those who want a broad base of computing knowledge, with subjects chosen for their relevance to industry need and an approach that is closely aligned to current practice. The industry-led nature of the course will give individuals a broad base of computing knowledge and skills and equip students to work in the IT industry.


The Certificate of Higher Education in IT Systems and Applications will provide a broad basis of knowledge and skills in IT, enabling students to develop software and design and maintain computer systems. Knowledge of software development, databases, web development, systems and networks is considered to be a necessary starting point for anyone who wants to work in the IT industry. The course aims to enable students to make an effective contribution to the organisation in which they are employed by providing a framework for sound technical practices, including continuing professional development.

The combination of modules is constantly being updated in order to ensure our programme keeps pace with changes in this fast-moving industry. The course will include modules such as:

An emphasis on current industry best practice processes and standards will help to ensure that graduates are ready for the workplace. Graduates will therefore be equipped with a broad base of knowledge in IT, enabling them to take up entry-level posts in technical support, systems support and networking. Students successful on this course could also progress onto year 2 of either the Foundation Degree or the BSc (Hons) IT Systems and Applications.




Normally 60 UCAS points plus 4 GCSEs at grade C minimum, to include maths and English or at least one A Level or Level 3 qualification i.e. Diploma, NVQ at Advanced Level or an Access to Higher Education qualification.


For mature applicants (over 21) with non-standard academic qualifications, Admission Tutors will carry out an interview and consider the applicant’s ability to succeed on the course, taking into account their past experience in relevant areas.

Applying for a Full-Time Degree-Level course



Apply through UCAS



If you would like to apply for any of Colchester Institute's Degree Level courses, your method of application will differ depending on whether
you want to apply for a full-time or part-time version of your chosen course. If you are applying full-time, you will need to apply through the
Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), which is a UK-based charity whose main role is providing the application process for almost
all British universities.



The service cost £23 for a multi application and £12 for a single application in 2015, however it is possible this may increase for 2016 applicants.
Each course has a unique "course code" that you will need to make note of and use during your applciation. You can find out more information and

Applying for a Part-Time Degree-Level course


All part-time degree-level courses are not offered through UCAS, and must be applied for directly through Colchester Institute.

Applying as a Full-Time International Student (EU & Overseas)


Applications for Higher Education courses from International Students must also be made via the Universities
and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Applications can be made on-line from any country via the UCAS website
at www.ucas.com. Details of all eligible courses
are given at this site, Colchester Institute's UCAS reference number is CINST C75.



International Applications made via UCAS will be forwarded to us for processing but the offer and acceptance
procedure is made through UCAS and not directly with us.

Applying as an Part-Time International Student (EU only)


Students coming into the UK on a Tier 4 (General) student visa will only be eligible to apply
for full-time courses at a minimum NQF level 3
or above or full-time English Language Programmes.
