About this course
Nurses must do 2 case studies 1 involving a child, 1 involving an adult. Examinations are held on third Saturday of March and September each year. There is a 90 minute written paper consisting of 2 parts, a 30 minute multiple choice questions and short answer questions and 3 compulsory essay questions. There is also a 5 minute verbal presentation on one of the case studies. The remaining 10 minutes will consist of general oral health topics. Nurses would either attend 15 tutor led sessions at Start Training or would complete the work by distance learning with tutor support.

Part A: Log Sheets
The dental nurse will provide and care for the oral health advice of TEN individuals, seen on at least TWO occasions and must cover at least SIX of the specified patient groups.
Part B: Expanded Case Studies
The dental nurse must complete TWO case studies from the log sheets.
- ONE involving a child
- ONE involving an adult
Each case study must be 2000 words long covering a topic from the range specified.
Part C: Display/Exhibition
The dental nurse must use the set lesson plan to plan, produce and evaluate a display/exhibition which ideally, but not necessarily, should be in their place of work.
Examination
The examination, which will assess underpinning knowledge and understanding, takes place on the third Saturday of March and September each year and is held in selected areas.
Written Paper
The 90 minute written paper consists of: Part A: - 30 minute multiple choice questions
- Short answer questions
Part B: - 3 essay questions, all of which are compulsory
Oral
The oral exam lasts a total of 15 minutes. The dental nurse will be required to give a 5 minute verbal presentation on one of their case studies, of which they would have been informed by the exam board three weeks prior to the examination. The remaining 10 minutes will consist of general oral health topics.
In order to complete the above requirements and prepare for the external examination dental nurses are required to attend 15 tutor lead sessions at Start Training Limited, taking place each fortnight on Friday afternoons from 12.30 – 3.30pm, over a 30 week period, prior to the examination.
