About the course
This qualification aims to assist learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of the principles of caring for those with dementia. It covers areas such as person-centred care, the influence of positive communication methods, issues around the use of medication for those with dementia and the importance of providing appropriate activities.
Delivery and Duration
You will be provided with the learning materials either online and/or hardcopies and you will have the support of a knowledgeable assessor/tutor who will give you guidance and feedback on the course as you complete it. This course takes between 2 to 6 months to complete.

Entry requirements
There are no specific prior qualifications needed to access this qualification. However, learners might find it useful if they have already completed a Level 1 qualification.
Due to government funding these courses are available free of charge; subject to the learners meeting the set eligibility. You must have lived in the UK/EU for the past 3 years and be over years old. There may be a fee should you withdraw from the course.

Subjects covered The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care contains seven mandatory units to help you gain knowledge and understanding in these areas: Dementia awareness (2 credits) You’ll develop knowledge of what dementia is and its different forms, and how others can have an impact on a person with dementia. The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia (2 credits) You’ll develop the knowledge and understanding required to enable the person with dementia to experience well-being. You’ll develop your knowledge of the person-centred approach to dementia care and support. Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia (2 credits) You’ll gain the underpinning knowledge required to develop your awareness of the differing communication needs and abilities of people with dementia to enhance positive interactions. Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care (2 credits) You’ll understand the concepts of equality, diversity and inclusion that are fundamental to person- centred care practice. Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person-centred approach (2 credits) You’ll develop your knowledge and understanding of people who may have specific needs for receiving medication because of their experience of dementia. You’ll develop knowledge of these medication requirements. Understand behaviour in the context of dementia (3 credits) You’ll explore different forms of behaviour and the factors that can affect behaviour in a person with a dementia. You’ll learn how to respond in an appropriate and supportive manner to behaviour that may be challenging. Understand the benefits of engaging in activities in social care (2 credits) You’ll understand the benefits of engaging in activities to enhance physical, mental and social well-being in a diverse range of settings. Progression Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to: NCFE Level 2 Award and Certificates in Mental Healt NCFE Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in Health & Social Care Possible employers Successful completion of this qualification will help support a number of job roles within the Health and Social Care sector as you may be working with people who have dementia, or are at risk of developing dementia in your day-to-day role.
