Students will study a range of Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools related units which will extend their understanding of working in this sector. Each unit is made up of credits, at Level 2 students require nine mandatory units which include:
Child and Young Person Development
Safeguard the Welfare of Children and Young People
Communication and Professional Relationships with Children Young People and Adults
Equality Diversity and Inclusion in work with Children and Young People
Health and Safety
Supporting Learning Activities
Support Positive Behaviour
Maintain and Support Relationships
Improve own team and Practice
There are also a diverse range of optional units, from which units that provide a total of six credits are selected to reflect the student’s placement practice. These include:

About this course
Students may be able to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
No entry requirements, however you will undertake screening as part of the interview process to check that your skills are at a suitable level for those entering this sector. Students will need a genuine interest in working in the sector and should demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm. Students need to be reliable, honest, trustworthy, well motivated and self reliant. Students should be at least 16 years of age.

Course programme
This one year programme leads to a nationally recognised qualification. It introduces you to an occupational area, enabling you to develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding required of those working in this sector.
This course provides the opportunity to develop occupational competence for working in schools, through attendance and assessment in the work place. You can undertake this qualification as a newly employed member of staff in the schools sector or as a volunteer in a school. You will need to be working with children of compulsory school age.
Students will attend college for one session per week on a Monday 9am - 1pm (alternate weeks) at Penybryn School, Tuesday from 6pm - 8pm at Tycoch or Friday 9.30am - 11.30am at Tycoch.
The course includes compulsory work placement in a school of a minimum of 300 hours throughout the programme. (minimum 10 hours per week). There is an emphasis on the development of skills with help and support available on an individual basis.
Knowledge assignments are internally assessed. Occupational competence is assessed in placement by an occupationally qualified and competent assessor.
This course can also be offered as a Foundation Apprenticeship.
